A few things to come to mind watching this video:
1) Dude ran from a cop. Cops *hate* chasing people. So I’m not surprised the dude got a bit of a licking after he forgot he was running, sat down, and the cop caught him. Disappointed, but not surprised.
2) Since when did cops have obvious and blatant tattoos? And shaved side haircuts? I remember when cops were required to be professionals. They were required to dress professionally, have professional haircuts that a banker would find appropriate, and of course no frickin’ tattoos. Now too many of them look like they’re modeling for Neo-Nazi Quarterly. Once upon a time, the difference between a banker and a cop was that a banker wore a fedora and a cop wore one of those flat cop hats. They both wore ties, dress shirts, dress pants, black shiny shoes. Over the years, things got more casual for both professions (and losing the tie and the black shiny shoes was definitely a plus for cops, those weren’t too useful if they got into a scuffle with a drug dealer), but cops should still present a professional appearance in public. Visible tattoos and a shaved-side haircut don’t scream “professional” by any definition of the word.
3) The moment when the cop started pulling his gun and yelled at the cameraman who was recording this, “Get back!”, was primo. Later on the news we find that the person doing the recording is a very dark-skinned African-American. This white neo-nazi-looking cop appears to be operating under the belief that all African-Americans are a threat — even those armed with nothing more than a video camera. Wow.
All in all, I didn’t find anything very surprising or shocking about this video. I doubt there will be any prosecution or lawsuit regarding this cop’s behavior, it does not rise anywhere near the level of criminality — appallingly unprofessional, yes, criminal, that’d be damn hard to prove. What it does do, however, is show the mentality that has swept across police departments lately, where professionalism has up and gone and been replaced with a look and attitude that might be at home in a neo-Nazi encampment.
