Sadness. You knew it was coming, he was 82 years old and they had not always been easy years, but there was always hope that he would hang on and make another album before he went. As it was, he went out on a high note. “You Want It Darker”, the album he released three days after his 82nd birthday, is a masterpiece on the same level or greater as any other album that he ever did, and I am glad that I bought it before his death so that he got to see that people actually did like and appreciate his artistry even at the end of his life.
I am more upset about Leonard Cohen dying than I am about Donald Trump being elected President. That surprises me. Funny how that works. Leonard was a gentleman and a poet, a visionary and a real mensch. The news that he has gone has taken a light out of this world, a light in the darkness that shone through the cracks where the light gets in. Him no longer being here is like having a personal friend gone.
That other stuff? That is just politics. It is important. But it is not personal. As a relatively affluent straight white male here in the People’s Republic of California, the politics stuff is an abstraction to me here, it is not something that affects me personally or will turn my life into a living nightmare. And the abstract never touches someone on a deep personal level the way the personal does.
