They were found on a laptop jointly owned by Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin, were apparently emails that had been forwarded by Huma to her personal account to print out because the State Department computers would not print out things, and were found there when the laptop was examined looking for evidence of Weiner sexting underage girls. They are not new emails, the FBI already has copies of these emails from Hillary’s own mail server, and they have no bearing on any investigation of Hillary Clinton. They might, however, be cause to open an investigation of Huma Abedin to see if she mishandled classified information.
Why FBI director James Comey decided to notify Congress about these emails, and why he decided to do so in the vague way he did, is inexplicable. The FBI generally does not make statements about ongoing investigations, and any promises he previously made to Congress apply only to the Hillary Clinton investigation, not to any investigation of Huma Abedin. Was Comey, a Republican, engaged in blatant partisanship? I suspect we’ll never really know. But what we do know is that on these emails, at least, there’s no “there” there when it comes to their applicability to the Clinton email investigation — Abedin sent them to her personal account, and Abedin is the only person who may be under investigation with regard to them.
