A Native American woman, Renee Davis, texted one of her friends that she was feeling really low and was thinking about killing herself. Her friend called the police to check up on Renee, mentioning that Renee was possibly suicidal and might need psychiatric intervention due to depression.
This is why people of color fear the police more than they fear criminals. This. Criminals largely won’t kill them. Criminals will make their lives miserable, sure. Will break in and steal their stuff, will hang around outside selling dope and making the neighborhood look trashy, and so forth. But the criminals won’t kill them.
The police, on the other hand… you call the police in a neighborhood of color, and there’s a good chance someone is going to die, maybe even you, the person who called the police, is going to die. Because they come in with trigger fingers itchy and with their nerves all twitchy, and all it takes is the sight of something that might be a weapon, and they pull that trigger — whether it’s pointed at them or not, whether they have a clear view of it or not, they pull that trigger. Because that’s how they’re trained. That’s what they do. And apparently they don’t care that this means people of color won’t call them for service, won’t talk to cops when cops enter those neighborhoods, indeed run as fast as they can away from cops when they see cops enter their neighborhood. I mean, if people wearing blue uniforms have a habit of killing people with your color skin, wouldn’t you run?!
And apparently the cops are just fine with all this. Because they keep killing people of color for things where they wouldn’t kill a white person. As for this poor pregnant girl who needed help finding peace in her life, I guess she found peace. It was likely not, however, the peace that she craved or deserved. The peace of an early grave rarely is.
