So does mental illness. So does cancer (I was in North America in July on a semi-rushed visit to see my sister for one last time. She’s two years younger than me, has always lived a stable, high-functioning, low-risk-taking lifestyle [unlike me] and is now up against a return of some aggressive bowel cancer, despite the surgery, radiation and chemo she has for it last year.) So does being born in a Third World country, and so many other things. It sucks to be human. Hell, for almost every living thing on Earth, aside from pet cats and dogs in First World countries, life is full of suck and terror. If you’re a (non-pet) animal, there’s always something that wants to fight you or kill you. At least some of us First World humans have a chance to make our lives a little less sucky. The key is to make the non-suckish parts last longer than the suckbits. And to be aware of how good things are going when they’re not sucking. I reckon Jones did the former. I hope he was conscious of the latter.
Yes it does, whether you’re the sufferer or the one watching over them. Watching a once contributing and dynamic individual become an empty husk is heartbreaking, not to mention scary if that someone is a parent.
