The attempt by sore losers to repeal a law they didn’t have the votes to repeal by holding the whole country hostage has failed. Having seen the handwriting on the wall — epitomized by John McCain’s statement that “we can’t get much lower in the polls, we’re down to blood relatives and paid staffers” — and seeing that President Obama would let the country default rather than give in to tyrants who wanted to gain by terrorism what they could not gain at the ballot box — they flinched and let the government re-open.
What was hilarious about the whole thing was the focus by people of all political stripes on minor functions of the government. So the panda cam went down. Big frickin’ deal. So some people had trouble getting in to see some memorials built with government money on government land. Excuse me but when 48 million people are about to lose their SNAP, and 3.6 million disabled veterans each of whom is a trained killer aren’t going to get their checks, and it’s only a matter of time before the food riots start, fuck memorials and the pandas can just screw themselves (well, maybe not, they seem to have difficulties screwing other pandas, much less themselves, which is why they so frickin’ endangered).
What we found out mostly, from what I saw, is that Americans are shallow and ignorant people who focus on trivial bullshit rather than on the important things. For example, every day you get disabled veterans being discharged from the military. The VA was not processing disability benefits. That was fucking huge to those people, who now are going to have to wait for two weeks longer for the benefits that are their due for their service to our country. Where was the outrage over that?
Let’s face it: we live in an embarrassing country, where the trivial is exalted and bullshit is all anybody cares about. What the fuck happened to dealing with reality? I mean this reality, not some made-up bullshit reality of cotton candy trees and pink unicorns like too many people seem to live in today? Doesn’t seem to be in the cards for the vast majority of Americans. Which is why, as JzB is fond(?) of saying… We Are So Fucked.
