Division-playing at its finest! A music-making buddy of mine used to claim that there was a direct, continuous line from English musicians in the 16th-17th centuries playing their “divisions” (variations where the notes get divided into smaller and smaller parts as the piece goes on) and mountain music over here. He even had the instruments mapped out functionally. I don’t know if he was right, but Flatt and Scruggs have the same appeal to my ear as division-playing has. Good stuff!
