. Doc Watson plays the “Black Mountain Rag”, an old fiddle tune that he adapted for flatpicking. I don’t know why Doc adopted flatpicking as his playing style. I know why I adopted flatpicking as my playing style — fingerpicking required too much coordination, heh — but coordination didn’t appear to be Doc’s problem. Still, it made for a unique sound, and Doc had a long life doing it successfully.

Thanks for the reminder. I saw Doc in concert once many years ago. He broke a string mid stride and replaced it without missing a note. Impressive. –ml
