Prince Rama, “Raghupati” off their 2010 album Shadow Temple, playing at a riverfront park in Brooklyn. This is a trio of kids raised on a Hare Krishna commune doing… weird electronica psychedelic shit is the best way I can describe it. One of them explained to a reviewer, “church service on a Hare Krishna commune is dancing around wildly chanting nonsense and beating on drums, so …”. Uhm, okay. Whatever. For some reason I had to watch a number of their videos tonight rather than saying “Oh, that’s nice” and just posting, already. A very… strange… way of spending my time tonight
.
This, BTW, is apparently a classic Hindu song beloved of Ghandi that they’ve… adapted. Very strangely, I might add.

One the one hand, I didn’t think I’d make it through this. On the other, I’ve consumed an unusual amount of alcohol tonight.
Still – I’m impressed you sat through a number of their videos. I don’t have that kind of endurance.
Well, you look at horn players, and I look at drummers. Sort of like when most folks talk about Sonic Youth they talk about the guitar players, but I talk about Steve Shelley, the world’s most overlooked great drummer. The chick pounding on those drums is righteous. She has some damn good moves and does it while *singing* and *dancing*, which is harder than you’d think while doing an intensely physical task like pounding on drums. The fact that they seem to be really into their music is also amusing. So I guess I have a slightly more positive impression. They have 1/3rd of a good band there
